In memoriam Linnart Mäll
(7.06.1938 - 14.02.2010)Linnart Mäll was a scholar of Oriental Studies, translator and politician.
Linnart Mäll graduated from Tartu State University in 1962 with a degree in general history. He continued with postgraduate studies at the Institute for Oriental Studies at the Academy of Sciences of USSR where he acquired scholarship of classical Oriental Studies. The main field of study of Linnart Mäll was Indian thought, especially Buddhism. He translated from Sanskrit, Pali, classical Chinese and Tibetan into Estonian many base texts of Buddhism, Hinduism, Confucianism and Taoism and founded Classical Oriental Studies in Estonia.
The academic career of Linnart Mäll did not proceed very smoothly in the former Soviet Union. Mäll was discharged from the University of Tartu because of the notorious court process of his teacher Bidia Dandaron (1914-74) in the beginning of 1970ies. He was not allowed to defend his PhD thesis until 1985. After the restoration of the Republic of Estonia he worked at the University of Tartu as a senior research fellow and the head of the Centre for Oriental Studies.
Linnart Mäll was also active during political rearrangements in Estonia. As a vice-chairman of Estonian National Independence Party, a member of Estonian Congress, Estonian Committee, and Constitutional Assembly, he played an active role in the restoration of the Republic of Estonia.
His biggest contribution in world politics was the foundation of Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO). The initiative for UNPO came from the representative of Tibetan government in exile Lodi Gyaltsen Gyari. Mäll organized many meetings in Estonia in 1990 to discuss the matters of starting a new international organization, and subsequently UNPO was founded in the Hague in 1991. At the Founding Assembly Linnart Mäll was elected the first chairman of UNPO.
After re-independence Estonia continued to support UNPO. Linnart Mäll acted as director of Tartu Coordination Office of UNPO. Beside Tibetan issues his main concern was the condition of nations and peoples of the Russian Federation, while he supported their national movements and struggle for greater self-determination. Seminars and conferences at UNPO Tartu Coordination Office were important forums for the representatives of the minority peoples of Russia. In 1997 and 2001 the General Assemblies of UNPO took place in Estonia, at the UNPO General Assembly in 2001 the Universal Declaration of the Rights of Peoples was adopted. Linnart Mäll was one of the main authors of this declaration. After closing the Tartu Coordination Office of UNPO in 2003, Mäll continued the work on people’s rights as the director of Institute of the Rights of Peoples.
Linnart Mäll was also the founder and president of Estonian Paneuropean Union.
Linnart Mäll was awarded with Estonian Order of the White Star, IV grade; Order of the National Coats of Arms, IV grade; the Small Medal of the University of Tartu; and twice the Medal of UNPO. He was the laureate of Estonian National Science Award for Humanities in 2008.

Linnart Mäll, a man whose passing sorely touches us all, once said that a wise thought is only justified by history.
Linnart Mäll always had thoughts that have been justified by history, and he shared them with those who have walked the same paths. This is what made him strong and his steps firm.
He knew that keeping one’s silence may be fatal and he gave a voice to the nations deprived of their autonomy – those to whom many do not want or dare to listen.
As one of the founders of the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organisation and, therefore, a spokesman for those oppressed, he took the burden of suffering from many, never dismissing it, never turning away.
This is what made Linnart Mäll a model of ethical politics for all of us.
He was a humanist, one of the founders of orientalism in Estonia, a teacher of thousands of students, and one who brought Eastern thought to Estonia. The research done by Linnart Mäll and the many books he translated helped direct and widen Estonian thought, and he was one who broke down the barriers between distant cultures and Estonia. This is how, as a teacher, he made us much richer and more tolerant, though ignorance was something he did not tolerate.
Decades ago, Linnart Mäll translated the words of Mahatma Gandhi into Estonian: “If someone told me that my dream could never be realised, I would agree but would continue on my way.”
This is the way that Linnar Mäll himself took, a path supported by justice and courage that was carried by thoughts already justified by the present.
I bow my head and extend my condolences to the family of Mr. Linnart Mäll, his friends, those who shared his ideas, his students, and to all who value the principles that were represented and defended by Mr. Linnart Mäll.

It is with great sadness that UNPO has received the news about Linnart Mäll, the first UNPO President, passing away. Mr. Mäll was one of the founding fathers of UNPO, and highly regarded both in his native Estonia and abroad. He was highly esteemed by his UNPO colleagues.
UNPO General Secretary Marino Busdachin on behalf of all UNPO members pays his deepest respect to Linnart Mäll and mourns the UNPO founder. Mr. Busdachin expresses his cordial condolences to Mr. Mäll’s family.
Mr. Mäll was dedicated towards the objectives of UNPO - he was a convinced defender of democracy and freedom and as he truly believed in non-violence, he had a profound knowledge of the writings of Mahatma Gandhi.

We are saddened to learn the demise of Dr. Linnart Mall, renowned Estonian scholar of Buddhism and sincere and staunch friend of Tibet and Tibetans. It is a big loss not only for us but for Estonia.
I met Dr. Mall first time in 1990, when we discussed the formation of UNPO. He organized the first visit of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Estonia. He attended several international conferences on Tibet. With his passing away, we lost a great friend and supporter.

малочисленных народов Линнарта Мялл.
Защита прав непредставленных народов для Линнарта Мялл была делом жизни
последних двух десятилетий. Марийцы хорошо понят его, марийцы
благодарны ему во многом. В том, что в 1992 году Линнарту Мялл дали 24
часа, чтобы он покинул Республику Марий Эл, в этом нет вины марийского
народа. Это была политика «сверху».
Многие марийцы встречались с этим чутким собеседником, готвым придти
на помощь в любое время. Члены Межрегиональной общественной организации
«Марий ушем» всегда отстаивали и отстаивают интересы марийского народа.
А имена таких людей, как Линнарт Мялл, навечно остаются в наших сердцах.

Линнарт Мялл приветствовал 3-й съезд народа мари, а ночью его разбудили и в его номере произвели обыск. Съезд обсуждал этот случай, но конечно, не смог его защитить. Но тогда эстонцы еще могли присутствовать на марийском съезде, как и представители центральных СМИ. Молчать, только потому что страшно, потому что все молчат – неприлично, но еще неприличней извращать выступление, выдергивать из него фразы и слова. Благодарю президента Эстонии за мудрость и широкий взгляд. Это бросилось в глаза в Ханты-Мансийске, и потвердилось сегодня. Всего несколько слов, но в них отображена жизнь ради высоких принципов.
Приношу соболезнования близким Линнарта Мялл, всем кто его знал, всем эстонцам.

Ушел добрый и хороший человек. Я надеюсь, что он ушел (и идет, и будет идти) по Светлому Пути. И Оттуда давать нам свет.
Благодаря нашему дорогому другу, чуваши, как и многие другие народы бывшего Советског Союза - финно-угры, тюрки, сибирские, кавказские - получили возможность самовыра& #1078;ения на международном уровне посредством UNPO.
Это был важный опыт самоосознания себя в этом мире и общения. Линнарт Мялль, как Учитель,преподал нам этот урок: быть в большом мире, не терея себя.
Мы скорбим об уходе великого человека и по своему обычаю всегда будем поминать его в эти скорбные и иные дни, что значит - он будет рядом с нами и будет подавать нам свои знаки.
"О строитель дома, ты видишь! Ты уже не построишь снова дома. Все твои строп разрушены, конек на крыше уничтожен. Разум на пути к развеществлению достиг уничтожения желаний" (Дхаммапада,ХI,154).
И мы - чуваши, как и другие люди Урало-Поволжья, будем советоваться с тобой и слышать твой голос, слово, совет. Не забывай нас, доктор Линнарт, а мы будем помнить о Тебе всегда. Улыбайся - как всегда.
